Basquiat et son amie Maripol sont rentrés du Mudd Club au petit matin et il a peint dans le loft de Maripol les portraits du photographe Edo Bertoglio, de Maripol, de sa compagne Suzanne Mallouk, Jeffrey Bretschneider, Arto Lindsay et la chat "Atom" en quelques minutes. Maripol a pris ces polaroids à 6 heures du matin (6 am) et a nommé l'ensemble "A.M."

Jean-Michel painted portraits of Edo Bertoglio, Jeffrey Bretschneider, Arto Lindsay, Suzanne Mallouk, Atom the cat, and Maripol, who recalled:
"I call this picture A.M., because it was shot in our loft, at six in the morning, after the Mudd Club. He had just painted our portraits, which you see behind him. I'm the one with the hoop earrings and the hat and the glasses. It was an instant moment long before Instagram was invented."
